What To Expect

Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa

Highlights: Scenic flight or train journey, panoramic mountain views, acclimatization

Arrive in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, by either:

  • Flight: Enjoy a breathtaking aerial view of the world’s highest mountain ranges.
  • Train: Experience the world’s highest railway, passing through the mighty Thangula Mountain Range, with opportunities to spot wildlife.

Upon arrival, meet your Tibetan guide and driver who will transfer you to your hotel in Lhasa City. After check-in, spend the day resting, acclimatizing, and getting to know your guides.

Transit Times:

  • From the airport: 60 km to Lhasa (~1 hour via highway)
  • From the train station: 25 km to Lhasa (~30 minutes)

Day 2: Escorted Tour of Lhasa (B)

Highlights: Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Sera Monastery

Today is your first full day on the high plateau, and you may experience mild altitude symptoms. Take it easy and stay hydrated.

  • Morning: Visit Jokhang Temple, the holiest temple in Tibet, always bustling with devoted pilgrims. Stroll through Barkhor Street, a vibrant marketplace and important pilgrimage route.
  • Afternoon: Explore Sera Monastery, one of Lhasa’s largest monasteries, known for its lively debates among monks.

Return to your hotel to rest and continue acclimatizing.

Day 3: Escorted Tour of Lhasa (B)

Highlights: Potala Palace, Drepung Monastery

  • Morning: Tour the iconic Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former seat of the Dalai Lamas. Though the climb is steep, the panoramic views and rich history make it worthwhile.
  • Afternoon: Visit Drepung Monastery, once home to over 10,000 monks. Wander its ancient alleyways and monastic quarters.

Day 4: Lhasa to Tsurphu Monastery (4,480m) – 65 km (B, L, D)

Highlights: Scenic drive, Tibetan villages, historic Tsurphu Monastery

Depart Lhasa via the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, crossing the Tolung River to reach Tsurphu Monastery after a picturesque drive through barley fields and traditional villages.

Built in 1187, Tsurphu Monastery is the historic seat of the Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Spend the afternoon exploring its labyrinthine lanes and aged structures before settling in for the night at the monastery guesthouse or in tents.

Day 5: Trek to Leten (5,090m) – 12 km (B, L, D)

  • Average Altitude: 4,300m
  • Distance: 25km
  • Trekking Time: ≈ 8 hours
  • Accommodation: Camp at Goku Thang Valley

Reach one of the trek’s most iconic locations, the Meditation Caves and the dramatic cliffs of Goku Thang Valley. These natural landmarks are believed to mark the entrance to the mythical palace of Machen Bomra, the mountain deity of Amnye Machen. Immerse yourself in the spiritual atmosphere of this unique spot.

Day 6: Trek to Bartso (4,950m) – 20 km (B, L, D)

Highlights: Lasar Pass (5,300m), nomadic landscapes

Trek through a stunning valley before ascending Lasar Pass (5,300m), where you will see traditional cairns, believed to bring good fortune. Descend into the Yangpachen Valley and reach Bartso, a tiny nomadic village surrounded by juniper trees.

Day 7: Trek to Dorjee Ling Nunnery (4,474m) – 15 km (B, L, D)

Highlights: Mt. Nyenchen Thangla (7,111m), Buddhist nunnery

Hike across high-altitude plateaus with views of the sacred Mt. Nyenchen Thangla, where locals pray and hang prayer flags. Arrive at Dorjee Ling Nunnery and set up camp nearby. Spend the evening visiting the nunnery and meeting Buddhist nuns.

Day 8: Trek to Yangpachen Monastery, Hot Springs & Drive to Namtso Lake – 14 km (B, L)

Highlights: Yangpachen Monastery, hot springs, Namtso Lake

Trek through the Lango River valley, crossing a steel bridge before reaching Yangpachen Monastery, a historic Kagyu sect monastery. Meet your driver and continue to the Yangpachen Hot Springs, where you can enjoy a rejuvenating soak (hot spring fees not included).

Afterwards, drive to Namtso Lake via Damshung Town, ascending to Lagen Pass (5,190m), adorned with prayer flags. From here, take in breathtaking views of Namtso, Tibet’s second-largest saltwater lake, considered sacred by Tibetans.

Day 9: Drive to Lhasa – 180 km (B)

Highlights: Nomadic encounters, scenic drive

Trace the Qinghai-Tibet railway route back to Lhasa, stopping to visit a nomadic family. Learn about their seasonal migration patterns and traditional lifestyle before crossing Legen Pass and following the Damchu River to Lhasa.

Say goodbye to Tibet! Your guide and driver will transfer you to the airport or train station.
